The Undergraduate Student Legal Aid Office provides free assistance to currently-enrolled full-time University of Maryland undergraduate students and handles an array of legal matters, including but not limited to the following legal issues: Landlord-Tenant Housing Issues Small Claims Traffic Violations Criminal Charges Domestic Relations Contracts Employment Issues Consumer Credit Consumer Rights Power of Attorney Lawyer Referrals Personal Injury If you have questions regarding a University charge, please come into our office to speak with a Student Defender.

Undergraduate students facing charges from the university can seek assistance from Student Advocates employed by the Undergraduate Legal Aid Office. Student Advocates are specially trained to answer your questions and act as your representative at hearings, should you want them to. Charges can fall under any of four categories: Academic Integrity, Student Conduct, Rights and Responsibilities, and Title IX.

In most cases, our basic consultation is sufficient to provide answers about your eligibility and options. Does not include document review or drafting or legal documentation.

Our complex consultation includes document review and is best suited for those that have been refused or denied, have received a request for additional information, or have received a notice of intent to deny.

You will not need to go to Chicago. During your appointment, we will collect your application and supplementary documents and do the initial processing. As part of this procedure, we will also collect your biometric information. Because of this, you will need to bring all your materials with you. We understand that the procedure requires a significant commitment on your part, and so we try to work with you during the process. So, please understand that when we ask questions or inform you of a particular requirement, we are not trying to make things more difficult for you, but are trying to save you costly and time-consuming problems later on. PLEASE NOTE: You are probably visiting this site because you were referred to it in a previous email sent by this office. We will be happy to perform a legalization (beglaubigung) for you. Please call us in advance to make sure we are authorized to legalize your document as there are some things which we are not authorized to legalize. Please be advised that: 1) You will need to bring valid, government issued, identification 2) Do not sign the document ahead of time 3) For some documents, there is a fee involved. This is payable by cash, check, or credit card. 4) Unfortunately, we do not have any documents or templates available for you to fill out (e.g. for an inheritance disclaimer). We recommend contacting the person (or organization) requiring the legalization for a template for you to use.
