Introduction to Public Speaking (For Adults) - Do you hate speaking in front of others? Do you dread having to give a presentation for work, or even speak during group meetings?  You are not alone- many adults fear speaking in public.  But the good news is that everyone can become better and more comfortable!  It starts with choosing the right things to say.  We will talk through some techniques for creating your “script” to have the maximum impact.  Then we will work on some techniques for actually getting on your feet and delivering a polished presentation.  Katie (your instructor) has helped people prepare for TED talks, keynote addresses, and work presentations, and she can help you too!

Unlocking Shakespeare - Work with Mary, our resident Shakespeare aficionado! Many young actors are intimidated by Shakespeare, but there are easy ways to unlock this beautiful text.  Learn the clues and tricks to successfully perform Shakespeare’s plays!  Each session will focus on a different aspect of Shakespeare, so you can do this as a drop-in, or take them all!

Monologues - Students will bring in a prepared monologue for this performance-based class.  (If you  have trouble finding one, please reach out, we would be happy to help you find one!)  For the purposes of doing text work, it is ideal to have a printed copy of their monologue as well.  Each student will have the opportunity to perform their monologue and receive one-on-one instruction/feedback.  As a class, we will also cover the technique of analyzing your monologue, finding beats, and developing a character.  This can be done as a drop-in class, or taken as many times as you like!  There is always more to learn, and deeper to dig with monologues.  Ages 14+

Auditions - Do you love performing, but hate auditioning?  Give this class a try!  Auditions are a necessary part of theater, so take the opportunity to become better at them!  We will cover how to approach an audition for a specific show vs a general audition, what makes great audition material, how to find that perfect song cut, and how to present yourself from the second you walk into the audition room.  This class will include learning these things as a group, and doing mock auditions to get some hand-on experience.  This class can be done as a drop-in, or as many times as you like!

Musical Theater Performance - Students will bring in one prepared (memorized) song per class, as well as their own karaoke track to play.  (This is due to the way sound works via Zoom- if you need help finding a track prior to the class, we will be happy to help!)  Each student will have a chance to perform their song and receive one-on-one instruction and feedback.  As a class we will cover things like analyzing song lyrics, finding acting beats within your song, and using your body as well as your voice to perform.  To get the most out of the class, we encourage students to bring in material appropriate for their age range.  This can be done as a drop-in class, or taken as many times as you like!  You can work a different song each time, or spend several sessions on one- it is up to you.*NOTE:  This class is primarily focused on the performance aspect of musical theater, rather than vocal production/instruction.  If your child is more interested in becoming a better singer, please consider one-on-one voice lessons, or our Intro to Reading Music Class! Tap Basics-  For those who have never tapped, or have very little experience, this is the class for you!  We will cover basic tap terminology, work on the physicality of tap, and learn a a few basic tap steps.  You DO NOT need tap shoes.  If you have them, great!!  Otherwise, a hard soled shoe and a hard floor will be fine to get started.  Please note that YOU MUST take this class first if you wish to take the Tap session in our Theatre Dance Series.

Intro to Reading Music-  This class is designed for students who do not know how to read music or have very basic music reading skills.  In this class we will talk about common music terms you will need to know, specifically for reading music in a musical theatre setting, and the basic music theory knowledge to be able to successfully navigate a score.  Some topics we will address are notes names and intervals, rhythms and notes values, and common key signatures.  This class will be taught with visuals, but you are encouraged to have staff paper and a pencil on hand to take notes if needed.

Theater Dance Basics - This class is for those students who do not have formal dance training.  We will cover some of the basic steps commonly used in Theater dance, as well as doing a basic dance warm-up and stretch each session.  If you do not have any dance training, you must take an Theater Dance Basics in order to participate in our other theater dance classes this session.

What Is Your Body?  How Does It Work?- An Intro to Body Awareness for Young Actors - Do you find that when you are singing a song or doing a monologue, you don’t really know what to do with your body?  It is not uncommon for young artists, but it is vital to begin building body awareness.  As performers, our bodies are our instruments.  This class is designed to help performing artists create a mind/body connection to start creating art with our whole bodies being engaged.  Be prepared to move, and challenge your ideas about what purpose your body serves.

• Type :

Mindfulness for Singers and Actors - This class will expand on the concepts introduced in What Is Your Body to bring awareness to our breathing and our inner monologue using yogic principles and an introduction to Alexander Technique.  Alexander Technique teaches us to move mindfully and rid our bodies of harmful tension.  It is an amazing practice for any performer, but particularly those who feel hindered by nerves, fear, or anxiety in auditions, rehearsals, or performances.  In this class, we will explore how our thoughts affect our muscles, and our muscles affect our thoughts.

It is highly recommended that you take What is Your Body prior to taking this class, but not required.  Either class can be done as a drop in.

Musical Theater History 101- Do you love musical theater, but only know a handful of shows?  Musical Theater is one of very few American-born art forms, and it has a rich history!  Each era built upon the last, leading to the varied, complex, beautiful shows that we know and love today.  Knowing this history will not only help you appreciate the shows you see and do more, but will also help you build a more expansive audition and performance repertoire.  Have you ever gone to an audition and had several other people singing the same song?  Learning a wider variety of shows can help you stand out and really choose the best material for the show you  are auditioning for.  We will cover the early origins of the American Musical all the way through today!

NOTE:  This will be a broad overview.  We will potentially be offering a more in-depth series later in the fall, but this is a perfect introduction!

College Audition Seminar - Parents welcome as well!  Does your student dream of being a professional actor?  A great college program is usually the start.  However, the college audition process can be daunting.  Pre-screens, varying repertoire requirements, lists of banned popular songs and monologues.  Programs are all slightly different, and finding what might be a good fit can seem tough. Many of the things that can prep your student for a successful round of college auditions begin well before their senior (or even junior) year, so we are opening this to anyone in high school.  We will cover everything mentioned above, make further recommendations for getting started, and leave plenty of time for Q and A!
