This course looks at the safety of the individual that we are moving, and the staff themselves. We look at best practice and the legislation around Moving and Handling. We assess each student’s understanding and retention of the information discussed by having them demonstrate and practice using several different types of equipment. We recommend, where practical, customers host this training on their site so that staff can practice on equipment and environments familiar to them. This further aids retention and ensures they will carry on best practice manoeuvres at work.

This course looks at stress and distress behaviours, particularly associated with dementia. Students will learn to understand that when a person is expressing stress and distress they can be communicating unmet needs. They will learn to identify the common types, causes and triggers for distressed behaviour, contribute to recording and understanding distressed behaviours using an antecedent, behaviour and consequences approach. They will be able to describe how to respond when a person with dementia is expressing stress and distress and recognise the importance of gaining access to professional support and interventions to alleviate stress and distress.

This course is a practical, service-based, competency assessment. The trainer will assess staff (up to 10 people per day) using the equipment within the service, and assess each person's knowledge around legislation and best practice for Moving and Handling.
