I am the Director of Town Planning at an architectural practice called tp bennett LLPTown planning is not really about planning towns: it is concerned
with managing how places evolve, controlling new development and planning for
the longer-term. A planner needs to understand the factors and forces
that affect towns and the countryside; only then can s/he know when and how to
intervene. Many planners work in local government, either drawing up plans to
guide future development (policy) or considering and determining planning
applications (development management). Most development needs
planning permission, whether it’s The Shard or a new Amazon warehouse by a
motorway junction. Consultant planners working in the private sector may carry out
studies for policy planners. (eg assessing sites on the edge of towns for
release for housing development), or may help prepare and guide planning applications
through the decision-making process. Planners must turn their hand to many disparate subjects – from
the impacts of development on buried archaeology or on local ecology, to
traffic generation and air quality, or helping justify the balance between
viability and the delivery of affordable housing. And there’s always a
human dimension – whether it’s politicians making decisions or local
communities lobbying them.I work alongside architects to help devise schemes that look good
as well as serving the purpose they are designed for. The planning system
is there to guide development, to allow landowners to realise the value of
their sites, while also making sure development is an overall public benefit.
Regulation is there for good reason, as the Grenfell Tower disaster has
so tragically proved.
The majority of planners have a first degree in geography and a
master’s degree in an aspect of planning or urban design, the latter often
achieved part-time after starting work. Likely A levels include
geography, mathematics and biology, but almost anything that shows you are
numerate and can write well would serve you well. Above all, you should be interested, curious
and observant of your surroundings and the environment in general.

an internal auditor I help the people who lead my organisation to protect the
business. I do this by looking independently at how well the
business is being run and recommending improvements where
necessary. I then make sure that those improvements
happen. I get to speak to a lot of different people in the business
which makes it a very sociable job.Most large organisations
these days have an Internal Audit department but they will vary enormously in
size. At the Bank of England, where I work as Senior Manager (Financial Stability and PRA Insurance Supervision), there are around 4,000 employees and we
have a team of 27 auditors, some of which specialise in IT. As
auditors, we look at some very interesting things: how banknotes are designed,
printed and moved around the UK; how interest rates are set; how ‘money’ is
moved between banks (£500bn each day!) and how around 1,500 financial
institutions are regulated. Internal audit is a
relatively new profession. Historically, many internal auditors
started their careers as financial accountants, as I did. Nowadays,
however, more and more people join with varied experience, including actuaries,

Apart from seeing patients at a large teaching hospital, I also lead a department doing medical research in diabetes. If a career in maritime and contract law (international sale
contract disputes and shipping disputes involving collisions, groundings, fire,
machinery failure, etc.) sounds interesting but you are not quite sure at this
stage that it may be the right career choice, then you could try being a
Claims/Recoveries Handler for a year after your A levels. This way even though
it may look like a gap year, it won’t be quite as such, as at the end of the
year you would have at least learnt some thing new and hopefully would be
clearer about what career path you wish to take. You could then either carry on
doing it or move on to something else that you may discover along the way and
become passionate about.A competent maritime claims handler can handle almost all aspects
of a maritime claim that normally a solicitor would. He could be on the
shipowners’ side protecting Ship's interests or the cargo owners’ side
protecting Cargo's interests.Claims can be as low as USD500 but quite regularly run into
millions.Even though my experience at sea greatly assists me in my claims
handling, it is not absolutely essential and there are crash courses available
for claims handlers to familiarise them with basic knowledge of how ships
operate and how cargo moves. In case you do decide to pursue this as a
long-term career, there are courses and qualifications that you could take on
to improve your knowledge so that you are not entirely dependent on what you
learn on the job.

I am a solicitor at a law firm called Mishcon de Reya. A solicitor, the most common type of lawyer, is a person
who:
- helps you understand and comply with the legal system and
rules which ensure the smooth functioning of our daily lives;
- fights for you when things go wrong;
- helps you acquire, protect and dispose of your assets.
Whether it be buying your first house, understanding your
tax affairs, setting up and growing a business, defending you in criminal
proceedings, acting for you in family matters or intervening in matters of
global or national or political societal and economic importance, there is
usually a lawyer involved.
In contrast to a barrister, (the lawyer who principally
argues your case in court), the solicitor will conduct a wide range of
activities on your behalf. The solicitor is your main relationship
manager, your adviser and your strategist.
Being a lawyer is never dull, you are constantly learning,
challenged and finding new ways of doing things. If you have a logical
mind, a sense of justice and would like to work with people, then it could be
for you. The law is also changing. The tech revolution is transforming
the way we work. You may think that to be a lawyer you need strong
advocacy skills and to like a good argument - and that is true for some.
But now we need considerable technological expertise too. We need
bright young lawyers who can bring their skills in tech to make the law more
accessible to the public. So if you have more of a scientific brain or a love
of logic and computer science, then it could be for you too.

I am a psychogeriatrician, a medical doctor who specialises in psychiatry of older
people.
I look after older people (and sometimes
younger people) who have problems with their mental health affecting the
functioning of their brains (and other parts of their bodies) that are not
functioning well. The role involves assessment, examination, investigation,
treatment and organising social care and support for patients in the
community. I also teach, educate and mentor junior doctors and medical
students. I work with other medical specialists, GPs
and non-medical healthcare workers like nurses, social workers,
psychologists, occupational therapists, support workers, councillors, care
agencies and the voluntary sector.
To become a psychogeriatrician, one
needs to initially attend medical school to obtain a medical degree. As a
junior doctor, one undertakes initial postgraduate rotational training in
medical disciplines before undergoing further training in general psychiatry
and then specialist training in psychogeriatrics.
The
psychogeriatrician is primarily registered with the General Medical Council.
Other professional bodies include The Royal College of Psychiatrists, The
British Medical Association, The Medical Defence Union, The Medical
Protection Society and many more depending on individual interests.

I am an environmental, planning and public law barrister at Landmark Chambers in London”The law” covers a vast range of careers of which the Bar is
one. Barristers provide specialised advocacy and advisory services across the
whole range of courts (from the magistrate’s court to the Supreme Court) and
legal fields (crime, family, social welfare, commercial and public law). Most barristers specialise in a particular
field but there is flexibility in the early years to work out what you enjoy
most and find most satisfying. Some like the pure intellectual rigour (and high
earnings) of huge commercial cases; others like areas with more human
interaction such as family, welfare and crime; some act for big businesses and
the state; others like acting against them.
The Bar can offer a very varied and highly rewarding career
and many of the skills you acquire during training are transferable.
Getting to the Bar is intensely competitive. However,
irrespective as to background, if you are strong academically, like oral
argument and are truly interested in the law and helping solve problems then it
can be a great career and there are large scholarship funds to help able
students through the post-grad qualifications.

Analytical
toxicology is detection, identification and measurement of foreign compounds
(chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse, natural toxins) in
biological specimens. This assists in the diagnosis, management, likely outcome
(prognosis) and prevention of poisoning. Toxicologists work in assessment of
exposure, therapeutic drug monitoring, forensic analyses and monitoring for
drugs of abuse. In addition, they can be involved in research and development
of analytical methods. In my role
as a Senior Toxicologist at Alere Toxicology, I oversee the day- to-day running of the laboratory, ensuring
the timely analysis of the samples. Drug of abuse analysis is done in urine,
hair or saliva samples by immunoassay and various chromatographic methods using
the latest technology. The most interesting part of my work is the
interpretation of the results and advising the customers. I am also involved in
research and development of new methods for emerging drugs of abuse. Alere Toxicology is part of the Abbott Group, a world leading provider of drugs of abuse
analytical services. This includes workplace drug testing, government agencies
(prison services), occupational health clinics and drug treatment and
rehabilitation centres. In addition, it offers occupational exposure (benzene)

I work at Imperial College Healthcare
NHS Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the UK which, with Imperial College London,
formed the first academic health science centre in the UK where clinical and
research excellence combine. Imperial College London is among the top 10
universities in the world.My work requires attendance at clinics and the operating theatres
at Charing Cross Hospital and the Western Eye Hospital where I and my team
of doctors, nurses and orthoptists see and treat our patients. Patients with
emergency problems as well as routine referrals from GPs, optometrists and
other specialists are seen. Patients with more specific problems due to
cataract, optic nerve problems, glaucoma, strabismus and double vision and
neurological eye problems are seen in my specialist clinics. I carry out eye surgery every week, with a total of approximately
700 cases per year; this includes cataracts (with monofocal, toric and
multifocal implants) and strabismus surgery (with and without adjustable
sutures). I run botulinum toxin clinics for treating muscular
problems around the eyes, strabismus (squint) and double vision. I studied Medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London University, and after qualifying I spent 13 years working in London, Southampton and Glasgow as a junior doctor. These posts
included general medicine and surgery neurosurgery, but predominantly
ophthalmology and required full time employment as well as taking further exams
to become a specialist (ophthalmologist). My training culminated with four years on the Moorfields senior
training programme in London. I now have a role at Imperial College London as an honorary Senior
Lecturer, this involves training medical students, mentoring young
doctors, examining students and remodelling the way students are trained
to be doctors. Since 1994 I have held various posts with the Royal
College of Ophthalmologists including the College Council and roles in relation
to training Ophthalmologists. I give some of my time as a Consulting
Ophthalmologist to Blind Veterans UK, an organisation which supports blind
ex-service personnel (formerly St Dunstan’s) and to St Luke’s Charity for the
clergy. I was appointed to the post of Surgeon Oculist to Her Majesty The
Queen in 2018, having been Surgeon Oculist to HM’s Household since 2002.

A Clinical Scientist
operates complex analytical instruments to analyse biological samples, look at
the results, check and report them. They offer advice to the clinicians on how
to interpret the results, the most likely causes of any anomalies, and can suggest
how to best treat the patient. Clinical Scientists are involved in clinical
research and innovation, developing new diagnostic methods, analysing results,
training and teaching. They are employed by the NHS as well as private
companies, such as pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies, and wherever
clinical analyses are performed. There are many different specialisms and you
will need a relevant degree before starting training (currently 3 years in the
NHS). I am a specialist in Analytical Toxicology. In my role I am
responsible for measuring the concentration of drugs in blood that are used to
suppress the immune system after organ transplant. This is done using
chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, and it helps the clinicians to
customise the dose of drugs used to make sure the patient does not suffer from
terrible side-effects, whilst at the same time preventing rejection of the
transplanted organ. There is a strong element of analytical chemistry involved

I work at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which is a tertiary
teaching hospital and one of the biggest hospitals in the UK.Part of my job as a general
physician involves looking after adult patients admitted to hospital with
medical problems (including headaches, chest pains, strokes, infections and
many more). I do “on calls” and ward rounds to make sure patients recover soon
and leave hospital. You work with a team of doctors of different seniority when
you are admitting patients and the ultimate responsibility of decision making sits
with the consultant. Diabetes and Endocrinology is a very
interesting field where I see lot of patients with Diabetes both Type 1 and
type 2 and then patients with problems with their hormones like thyroid, growth
or cortisol. Medicine is increasingly practiced in multidisciplinary teams so
you get to work with nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, podiatrists and
dieticians. I also work as a clinical
lecturer at King’s College London, Medical School. This involves organising
teaching for medical students, doing lectures, examining students at different
levels as well as working as a mentor/advisor to undergraduate students. I
enjoy teaching and spending time with medical students very much.
From the time you graduate one has to train for a minimum of 8-9 years before becoming a consultant. You can find the doctors pay scale on the
British Medical Association (BMA) website. Being a doctor is never boring and
you will get to see so many different people, different pathologies. Even though it is hard work it is a very
rewarding career option.
