Located in the beautiful mountains of Botetourt and Roanoke Counties, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is the second largest municipal park in the United Sates.  This 12,700 acre park's watershed and reservoir supply drinking water for the majority of the Roanoke Valley.  Low impact recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, paddleboarding and picnics are permitted in the Natural Reserve. There is one picnic shelter available for daily rental for small events (50 attendees or less).  Reservations are made through this site.Reservations for kayaks as well as entrance pass purchases for land-use activities and boating are made in-person at the Boat Landing on Reservoir Road.The Boat Landing is open daily except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  • April 1 through September 30:  6:30 am - 9:30 pm• October 1 through March 31:  8:30 am - 6:30 pm

Carvins Cove Reservoir reached full pond in 1946 and impounds 6.5-billion gallons of water. It is the primary source of drinking water for the Roanoke Valley. Carvins Cove Natural Reserve offers over 60-miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Trail maps are available at the Boat Landing office on Reservoir Road and at www.westernvawater.org/carvinscove. The reservoir at Carvins Cove impounds up to 6.5-billion gallons of water and serves as the primary drinking water source for the Roanoke Valley. Paddling and boating (10hp motors or less) are permitted on the reservoir. Boating pass purchases and required inspections are available at the Boat Landing office on Reservoir Road. Carvins Cove features an 80-foot long floating ADA accessible fishing pier. A current VA fishing license is required. There are six picnic tables under the shelter area. ADA accessible large picnic shelter and amphitheater Guests can launch their own kayaks, small boats (10hp motors or less) and standup paddleboards at Carvins Cove. User passes and required boat inspections are coordinated at the Boat Landing office on Reservoir Road. Kayak rentals are available during the summer months. Please check with the Boat Landing office (362-1757) for current availability and details. A low-profile dock is available at Carvins Cove for launching kayaks and skulls. Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is the second largest municipal park in the United States. The park is jointly owned and operated by the City of Roanoke and Western Virginia Water Authority. The park features a 6.5-billion gallon drinking water storage reservoir and over 60-miles of trail. An ADA accessible bathroom is available near the picnic shelter. Mountain biking is available on the more than 60-miles of mixed use trails at Carvins Cove. User passes can be purchased at the park's trailheads or online at www.westernvawater.org/coveonline.
