WHO ARE CHELMSFORD KARATE CLUB
Chelmsford Karate Club is not just a martial arts club; we are a vibrant and dedicated community deeply embedded in the heart of Chelmsford, Essex, since 1986. Our journey began with a profound commitment to three core values: physical fitness, mental discipline, and fostering a strong sense of community. With two thriving clubs, we have diligently promoted the revered art of traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu for over three decades.

Sensei Chris has trained for 20+ years. He began training under the instruction of Sensei Keith Bishop and Sensei Mick Fitzsimmons at the Trent Road Karate Club at the age of 6.
My karate training has taken me to many places in the UK, Europe and South Africa and given me the opportunity to train under many senior instructors, including Shihan James Rousseau, Sensei Len Sim and Sensei Arnold De Beer
Sensei Chris took his Shodan (1st Dan) in 2007 followed by his Nidan in 2013. Sensei Chris continued to train under his Instructor Keith Bishop for a further 6 years. In 2016 he took his Sandan (3rd Dan) and more recently his 4th Dan in 2020.
After attaining my shodan and under supervision of Sensei Keith I began teaching in the class until eventually I was able to run the club unsupervised. I covered the club on many occasions where Sensei Keith could not attend.
Throughout the years Karate has continued to grow and become part of my life. It has helped me with confidence, co-ordination, stability and balance, most importantly through Karate I have met many people and made many new friends.
In June 2020 we sadly lost our friend and mentor, Sensei Keith Bishop. Sensei Keith ran the Trent Road/North Avenue Karate club for 22 years before his passing in late June 2020. He was a true friend and mentored many students, many of which attained their shodan and beyond.
Sensei Chris took over the running of Sensei Keith's club in early 2020.
More Recently Chris has spent time exploring reality based self-defence concepts and conflict resolution and has gained a number of qualifications and will soon be incorporating these concepts into the regular karate classes and running individual self-defence programs.

Sarah Milford
Sensei Sarah has trained in Karate for over 30 years. Her journey began as a ‘reverse Billy Elliot’. As a child she took ballet dancing lessons in the same building as the karate classes and would often skip her dancing lessons to hide on the stage and watch the karate. Eventually she stopped the dancing and started training under the instruction of Sensei Kevin Nason in the early 90s.
Sensei Sarah achieved her first Black belt in 2000 at the age of 21. Although not a fan of grading she has since progressed to Nidan (2nd Dan) in 2002, Sandan (3rd Dan) in 2010 and most recently Yondan (4th Dan) in 2020.
In her professional capacity Sensei Sarah is a fulltime Youth Worker for Essex County Council Youth Service and a Level 3 designated safeguarding officer working with young people across Essex every day. She has been teaching Karate to children and adults since 2002.
Karate training for me has been the consistent stable in my life. It has helped me to deal with life’s ups and downs. Karate has enabled me to travel the world having trained in various places throughout the UK and Europe as well as South Africa and Australia. The people I have trained with become more than just friends they form part of my karate family.
