EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals process and heal from trauma and distressing memories. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and is based on the idea that traumatic experiences can become "stuck" in the brain, causing ongoing emotional and psychological distress.During an EMDR session, the therapist helps the client focus on distressing memories while engaging in a form of bilateral stimulation, most commonly through guided eye movements. This process is thought to facilitate the brain’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing the person to reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional charge. As a result, individuals often experience a decrease in the intensity of negative emotions associated with the trauma and are able to integrate the memories in a more adaptive way.EMDR has been shown to be effective for a wide range of issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief, offering a powerful tool for healing and emotional regulation.
