Massage Therapy is not a luxury, but an essential part of living a healthy life. Swedish massage was developed early in the nineteenth century, by professor Ling, of Sweden. Swedish massage is typically a light to medium pressure massage. Swedish massage incorporates a physical level of our body systems and has relaxing effects. It can have sedative effect on the nervous system, resulting in relaxation. Massage will relax a muscle spasm and relieve tension. By stretching the connective tissue, massage will improve circulation and bring oxygen and nutrients to body cells. Muscles begin to ache when chemical by-products from physical activity (mainly lactic acid) begin to build in the tissues. This usually happens when the muscles are being used beyond their normal capacity, and the blood and lymph cannot eliminate the lactic acid quickly enough from the area.
