WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnosis is a state of heightened suggestibility to suggestions (Clark L. Hull, 1933).

Not everyone responds the same to all the suggestions: in fact, you might experience something with some suggestions and nothing with others. It is perfectly normal. 

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. You might feel a number of different sensations: notice your eyes fluttering or your breath going deeper, your body might feel lighter or heavier as your muscles relax and you generally feel very pleasantly relaxed too. The experience is unique to each and every individual.

Hypnosis is a collaborative process. By listening to my words and voice, and by actively imagining and accepting the positive scenes or imageries I will suggest to you, you will become hypnotised. It has been proven that hypnotic suggestions will help you achieve your desired goals for positive change if you positively embrace them and go along with them. Just enjoy the experience.

HOW DOES IT FEEL?

Hypnosis is not a state of sleep or a state of unconsciousness. During hypnosis, roughly 90% of people are fully aware and remember everything. It is a bit like reading a book or watching a movie or even driving: where what happens around you doesn’t matter so much because you are engrossed in another activity. What happens to the brain is similar to what happens during meditation. 

During hypnosis, you do not lose control and you are not controlled. I cannot make you do things that you do not want to do. I can only show you the road, but you are the driver. 

In principle, to get to the desired point, you follow my suggestions. But if, at any time, you do not feel comfortable, and if there is something you would rather not imagine, you do not have to do so.

Hypnosis is safe when used by competent professionals (just like any other tool). You never get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis and you can decide to end the session at any time. You only do what you want to do.

Stage hypnosis has brought a lot of negative misconceptions as regard to hypnosis. Associating stage hypnosis with hypnotherapy can considerably reduce the effectiveness of the therapy so it is important to distinguish them and treat them as two very different things.  

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

Hypnotherapy is the clinical use of hypnosis. It promotes healing and positive development or changes through the use of hypnosis as a tool. Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy: a form of psychological therapy. Hypnotherapy requires on average 4 to 6 sessions; it varies depending on the situation.

Hypnotherapy can be applied effectively to various disorders. It is evidenced-based and numerous clinical research have proven its efficacy. A clinical review on Hypnosis was published by the British Medical Journal in 1999 (Vickers & Zollman, Hypnosis and relaxation therapies, BMJ 1999; 319: 1346-1349) and demonstrated the efficacy of Hypnosis on a wide number of conditions. 

Hypnotherapy was recognised officially by the British Medical Association in 1955 in areas of psychoneuroses and hypnoanaesthesia.
