Summer Programs

IMPORTANT:One camp per student only.Camper must be a resident in York Region. Camps run from Monday to Friday, from 9:15am - 3:30pm each day (unless otherwise specified). Parent drop-off period is between 8:30am - 9:15am. Meals are not provided—campers must bring their own lunch. The Community Safety Village is a nut-free facility.There is no cost for camp programs; however, transportation to the Village is not provided.Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Maximum 75 studentsProgram Descriptions:Police Lesson: Peer PressureGrade 4 students learn about making positive choices and the possible consequences resulting from negative choices. They learn how they can demonstrate several of their school board's Character Attributes in making positive lifestyle choices. Students participate in peer pressure scenarios, based on real-life experiences, to greater enhance their understanding.Fire Lesson: Emergency AwarenessGrade 4 students will be introduced to different types of disasters and the concept of emergency or disaster awareness. Students will learn about emergencies that are most likely to happen in York Region and will become aware of examples of both human-made and natural caused disasters. Learners will work collaboratively in groups through an engaging Kahoot- Bingo game to identify and select items that would be helpful to have in case an emergency were to happen in their community. Learners will apply their learning in the lesson through cooperative education and create kits for a selected scenario.Paramedic Lesson: Recognizing and Responding to Various Medical EmergenciesGrade 4 students will learn about various medical illnesses, including asthma, allergies, choking, seizures, strokes and unconsciousness, with a brief introduction to CPR. Through discussion and various activities, students will be given the knowledge and tools to feel comfortable should they be faced with an emergency at home, school or in their community.

Maximum 75 studentsProgram Descriptions:Police Lesson: Internet Safety and Appropriate Online BehaviourGrade 5 students learn about internet safety and appropriate online behaviour. Students will learn about safe use of the internet, with a focus on social media, the dangers of sharing personal information online and how to protect themselves. Students will understand how someone's online actions can affect others' feelings and emotional well-being.Fire Lesson: Personal Emergency PreparednessIn this lesson, personal emergency preparedness is taught to Grade 5 learners. They will learn about what to keep in an emergency kit in case they had to stay in their homes for 72 hours, or in case they had to evacuate their homes with little to no notice. To build on prior knowledge, a review of different types of disasters and emergencies will take place before all learners participate in an emergency challenge. Students will extend their learning from the lesson and work collaboratively with their peers to try and make the best Shelter-in-Place kit or Go-Bag for their unique scenario.Paramedic Lesson: CPR and Automated External DefibrillationCardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving skill that can be taught in childhood and can carry into adult life with the chance to impact someone's survival. This highly experiential session involves CPR mannequins and defibrillation trainers to give Grade 5 students a first-hand chance to perform CPR. They will witness a scenario where their actions could save a life.
