Following a very successful launch day on 17th September where we had Mark Rose, a Retired British Airways 747 pilot of over 20 years in the cockpit giving our customers some fantastic insight into the workings of the 747, he’s offered to come back! Mark flew The Deck aircraft many times, last on the 15th May 2017 from San Francisco to Heathrow and is hosting hour long workshops for up to three people in the cockpit of G-BYGA on The Deck on a few selected dates.

These sessions will give an in depth overview of the 747 history, it’s emergence as such a huge part of the British Airways fleet, the improvements through the 100-400 series of the aircraft type and his own thoughts on the early retirement of the beloved queen of the skies.

Mark will also talk about his personal history and connection with the 747 and G-BYGA in particular. He will also give a step by step walk through of the incident that happened onboard this aircraft when taking off from South Africa back in 2009.

Finally, Mark will walk you through the steps in the cockpit of what happens to bring the 747 to life, through engine start up, taxiing, take off, cruise, descent and landing along with some scenarios of what happens in the cockpit if different types of emergencies were to occur.

Each workshop is limited to three people due to the four seats in the cockpit (one for Mark)- discount for purchasing more than 1 within the same hour slot booking.

This ticket will also allow full access to the aircraft cabin as well and the workshop will occur entirely seated in the cockpit of The Deck itself. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and take as many photos as you like.

We have the answer!

The Deck 747 centres itself around an authentic top deck of an ex British Airways 747 aircraft, registration G-BYGA. It has been salvaged during the aircraft scrapping process and preserved in our hangar at City Airport, Barton, Manchester complete with original business class seats and cockpit. We offer all sorts of activities from event hire, flight simulator, aviation shop and our brand new fear of flying course.

This course lasts for 2.5 hours in total and is led by Mark Rose, ex training captain on the 747 for British Airways. Mark is also one of our simulator instructors. The course allows for you plus one additional person at the base price, and a second person can be added in the options for a small extra fee. It is ideal for those of you who want to have a chance to get onboard a section of a real aircraft and experience as near to flight conditions as possible without the anxiety of knowing you have to fly at the end of it. It is the perfect opportunity to prepare yourself for a real flight or a second fear of flying course where you can get in the air for real. The course will begin with Mark meeting you at the front of the hangar, giving you an overview of the session including providing you a boarding pass like you would get for a real flight. You will be invited to tour the hangar including a visual look of the aircraft from the outside. Mark will use this time to get to know you, what you understand your main fears are and if possible where they originated from.

Before boarding, Mark will talk through the general process of what happens to get an aircraft ready for flight including the engineer and flight/cabin crew and aircraft preparation. He will also detail the boarding process and a high level overview of what happens throughout the flight.

Once you feel comfortable, Mark will invite you onboard the aircraft where you will have the chance to take a seat in one of the original business class seats whilst Mark explains the interior of the cabin and the general process of what would happen during flight in terms of the cabin safety demonstration, service, entertain and some of the noises/sensations you would feel.

Throughout each element of the session, Mark will continuously work with you to understand further about your fear, addressing the root cause and any potential lack of understanding of what happens during the flight.

Before “take off”, Mark will give you the option to also visit the cockpit of the aircraft where he will offer you lots of information on the main flying processes, what the main flying controls do and also if you are comfortable some detail around what happens in emergency scenarios to give you confidence for when things don’t always go to plan- of course this information will only be shared with you if you are comfortable.

Once ready- Mark will give you the option to sit in one of the cabin business class seats for the simulated flight, or you are welcome to sit in one of the jump seats in the cockpit (behind the main pilot seats). Again- this is entirely up to you, we do recommend however sitting in the cockpit as this allows Mark to talk you through lots more of what happens in flight and the various noises etc.

Mark will give you the choice of which airport to fly from/to and you will be able to view the flight through the cockpit windows via our 220 degree immersive surround screen. Just to note again- this is a simulated flight only, the aircraft does not actually take off for real.

During the flight Mark will welcome input from you on certain experiences you have had that you may want to try and also if comfortable provide the ability to demonstrate some emergency scenarios in flight and talk through the actions of the flight and cabin crew.

You will be given the option to then sit in the cockpit or cabin for the simulated landing where Mark will talk through what happens after the aircraft lands too up until passengers disembark.

If feeling really brave, before the session ends, you will also be given the chance to have a little go at flying the aircraft sim for yourself, if this does help combat your fear.

To reiterate- this session is all about you and our 747 captain getting to understand and combat your fears so there is lots of flexibility in how the session will run based on your needs- please discuss this on your arrival and to confirm you can bring one additional guest/friend with you for no additional charge.

Take control of the Queen of the Skies, the world's most loved aircraft, the 747. This ex British Airways genuine 747-400 top deck complete with cockpit has been converted into a totally immersive simulator with full 180 degree wrap around screen for a 100% geometrically correct single image. It is registration G-BYGA which was retired from service in March 2020 and the top deck has been preserved as The Deck 747 at City Airport, Barton Manchester. You will sit in the left or right seat and take off and land anywhere in the world guided by one of our highly experienced instructors for an experience you won't forget.

What can you expect from your visit?

Everybody learns at different rates and have different levels of ability so your experience will be tailored to your needs.

Assuming you are a novice, your instructor will spend 5 minutes or so going through the basic controls and instruments, getting you to handle them to get a feel for how they work and their respective actions.

Following this, your instructor will programme a flight from and to an airport of your choice. It’s unlikely you will pull off the landing first time, but don’t worry, you can try the landing again. We will help you with your second one to make sure its successful if we need to, so dont worry!

The experience can include multiple take offs, landings, some emergency scenarios or why not go sightseeing by flying under the golden gate bridge, over manhattan, try a Kai Tak approach or a sully Hudson landing! Come prepared and advise your instructor on arrival what you would like to do within your timeslot! Each of these listings is for a different time amount and you can add on 15 minutes, if you wish to have shorter or longer, check out the other listings.

As this is set in a real 747 aircraft and due to the complexities around using real aircraft cockpit components, the simulator is set up to be as enjoyable to fly as possible whilst maintaining as much of the realism of the flight controls (and that its not too complex either). With this in mind you may notice that some of the actual 747 processes may be missed for certain scenarios- but the full experience will be talked through by your instructor if you wish to know more information.

If you wish to bring up to three people along with you, they can share your flying time for the whole experience for an additional charge. how you split the flying time is up to you! If they just want to sit and watch though in one of the cockpit observer seats, thats perfectly fine, they dont have to fly. Please use the product options to add. If you wish to add additional time to the experience, you can do so. Add on another 15 minutes for £35 to allow for another emergency scenario or one of your guests to take over and perform the landing.

Please be advised that whilst wheelchair access to the cabin is available, the flight deck door width limits this, therefore anyone wanting to come into the cockpit and in particular fly the aircraft must be able to walk in and sit down in the front cockpit seat unaided. Children aged 7 and over can fly as long as an adult comes along over age of 16 and will need to purchase an additional person in the options. We are open Mon-Sun each week for all sims.

Customers who arrive with children under 7 will be refused entry to the flight sim- the 747 Experience is not open whilst the sim is running so non paying customers and children will not be allowed to stay in the hangar whilst the sim is operational.

Due to the distance from the seat to the rudder pedals and control column, the instructor may need to assist with some of the flight controls if required.

As the simulator is located within The Deck 747 Experience hangar, you are welcome as part of this ticket to take photos in the cabin business seats too.

We have the answer!

The Deck 747 centres itself around an authentic top deck of an ex British Airways 747 aircraft, registration G-BYGA. It has been salvaged during the aircraft scrapping process and preserved in our hangar at City Airport, Barton, Manchester complete with original business class seats and cockpit. We offer all sorts of activities from event hire, flight simulator, aviation shop and our brand new fear of flying course.

This course lasts for two hours in total and is led by Mark Rose, ex training captain on the 747 for British Airways. Mark is also one of our simulator instructors. The course allows for you plus one additional person at the base price, and a second person can be added in the options for a small extra fee. It is ideal for those of you who want to have a chance to get onboard a section of a real aircraft and experience as near to flight conditions as possible without the anxiety of knowing you have to fly at the end of it. It is the perfect opportunity to prepare yourself for a real flight or a second fear of flying course where you can get in the air for real. The course will begin with Mark meeting you at the front of the hangar, giving you an overview of the session including providing you a boarding pass like you would get for a real flight. You will be invited to tour the hangar including a visual look of the aircraft from the outside. Mark will use this time to get to know you, what you understand your main fears are and if possible where they originated from.

Before boarding, Mark will talk through the general process of what happens to get an aircraft ready for flight including the engineer and flight/cabin crew and aircraft preparation. He will also detail the boarding process and a high level overview of what happens throughout the flight.

Once you feel comfortable, Mark will invite you onboard the aircraft where you will have the chance to take a seat in one of the original business class seats whilst Mark explains the interior of the cabin and the general process of what would happen during flight in terms of the cabin safety demonstration, service, entertain and some of the noises/sensations you would feel.

Throughout each element of the session, Mark will continuously work with you to understand further about your fear, addressing the root cause and any potential lack of understanding of what happens during the flight.

Before “take off”, Mark will give you the option to also visit the cockpit of the aircraft where he will offer you lots of information on the main flying processes, what the main flying controls do and also if you are comfortable some detail around what happens in emergency scenarios to give you confidence for when things don’t always go to plan- of course this information will only be shared with you if you are comfortable.

Once ready- Mark will give you the option to sit in one of the cabin business class seats for the simulated flight, or you are welcome to sit in one of the jump seats in the cockpit (behind the main pilot seats). Again- this is entirely up to you, we do recommend however sitting in the cockpit as this allows Mark to talk you through lots more of what happens in flight and the various noises etc.

Mark will give you the choice of which airport to fly from/to and you will be able to view the flight through the cockpit windows via our 220 degree immersive surround screen. Just to note again- this is a simulated flight only, the aircraft does not actually take off for real.

During the flight Mark will welcome input from you on certain experiences you have had that you may want to try and also if comfortable provide the ability to demonstrate some emergency scenarios in flight and talk through the actions of the flight and cabin crew.

You will be given the option to then sit in the cockpit or cabin for the simulated landing where Mark will talk through what happens after the aircraft lands too up until passengers disembark.

If feeling really brave, before the session ends, you will also be given the chance to have a little go at flying the aircraft sim for yourself, if this does help combat your fear.

To reiterate- this session is all about you and our 747 captain getting to understand and combat your fears so there is lots of flexibility in how the session will run based on your needs- please discuss this on your arrival and to confirm you can bring one additional guest/friend with you for no additional charge.

Take control of the Quen of the Skies, the world's most loved aircraft, the 747. This ex British Airways genuine 747-400 top deck complete with cockpit has been converted into a totally immersive simulator with full 180 degree wrap around screen for a 100% geometrically correct single image. It is registration G-BYGA which was retired from service in March 2020 and the top deck has been preserved as The Deck 747 at City Airport, Barton Manchester. You will sit in the left or right seat and take off and land anywhere in the world guided by one of our highly experienced instructors for an experience you won't forget.

What can you expect from your visit?

Everybody learns at different rates and have different levels of ability so your experience will be tailored to your needs.

Assuming you are a novice, your instructor will spend 5 minutes or so going through the basic controls and instruments, getting you to handle them to get a feel for how they work and their respective actions.

Following this, your instructor will programme a flight from and to an airport of your choice. It’s unlikely you will pull off the landing first time, but don’t worry, you can try the landing again. We will help you with your second one to make sure its successful if we need to, so dont worry!

The experience can include multiple take offs, landings, some emergency scenarios or why not go sightseeing by flying under the golden gate bridge, over manhattan, try a Kai Tak approach or a sully Hudson landing! Come prepared and advise your instructor on arrival what you would like to do within your timeslot! Each of these listings is for a different time amount and you can add on 15 minutes, if you wish to have shorter or longer, check out the other listings.

As this is set in a real 747 aircraft and due to the complexities around using real aircraft cockpit components, the simulator is set up to be as enjoyable to fly as possible whilst maintaining as much of the realism of the flight controls (and that its not too complex either). With this in mind you may notice that some of the actual 747 processes may be missed for certain scenarios- but the full experience will be talked through by your instructor if you wish to know more information.

This ticket includes 2 people to share the flying (or one just spectate), however if you wish to bring more, you can add on another 2 and they can share your flying time for the whole experience for an additional charge. How you split the flying time is up to you! If they just want to sit and watch though in one of the cockpit observer seats, that's perfectly fine, they don't have to fly. Please use the product options to add. If you wish to add additional time to the experience, you can do so. Add on another 15 minutes for £35 to allow for another emergency scenario or one of your guests to take over and perform the landing.

Please be advised that whilst wheelchair access to the cabin is available, the flight deck door width limits this, therefore anyone wanting to come into the cockpit and in particular fly the aircraft must be able to walk in and sit down in the front cockpit seat unaided. Children aged 7 and over can fly as long as an adult comes along over age of 16 and will need to purchase an additional person in the options. We are open Mon-Sun each week for all sims.

Customers who arrive with children under 7 will be refused entry to the flight sim- the 747 Experience is not open whilst the sim is running so non paying customers and children will not be allowed to stay in the hangar whilst the sim is operational.

Due to the distance from the seat to the rudder pedals and control column, the instructor may need to assist with some of the flight controls if required.

As the simulator is located within The Deck 747 Experience hangar, you are welcome as part of this ticket to take photos in the cabin business seats too.
