For skills camps, leadership training and cycle repairs.
From the 10th August we will be offering a limited number of collect and repair services in the EH44 and EH45 postcode areas under the new Cycle & Wheelchair Repair Scheme.This scheme aims to help those who need the help the most.
The scope of the service covers: Safety Check, Brake adjustment, Gear indexing, Chain lubrication
Any other work or parts may be outside the scope of the voucher scheme but we try to give the best value possible. A time frame for repairs along with an estimate of any likely additional costs will be communicated following a visual inspection of the bike during collection or upon its return to base. Please allow 10 minutes for the inspection during your collection slot. We aim to return your bike within 3 working days.
Skills tuition, coaching and leadership training. You can read about our team who came together through Scotland's MTB club of the year or you can experience one of our sessions from as little as £3. Our aim to is to provide the sort of access to activities we would have loved at each stage of our lives whether that is as a child or adult getting into cycling or as a teenager or adult looking for the skills to pass on their passion for cycling. All activities are carried out in accordance with government guidance for the sports sector.

The only kids activity in the Borders to use fully British Cycling qualified coaches and leaders.
Chris: Owner, Coach, MTB Leader. Tweeddale Coach of the Year. Chris is a coach, coach educator with over 12years experience working for British Cycling, Scottish Cycling and his club KICC (Scottish MTB club of the year). Chris also works with private clients and organisations for performance and skills coaching, mentoring and development work.
"I started working in bike shops when I was at School and racing XC as a youth, the informal support I had from older riders was great but I never found a club or a coach. Now as a coach I want to be able to help others avoid the mistakes I initially learnt by." CB
Chris has cycle specific coaching qualifications up to UKCC level 3 through British Cycling, literally wrote the book on cycle mechanics for a local college and has studied sports coaching and psychology at university. He also holds appropriate PVG, first aid, cycle training and mechanics qualifications as well as qualifications in adult education, assessment and verification.
Rachel: Coach, MTB Leader. Rachel has been coaching and leading for 12 years, in a range of cycling disciplines but also in both triathlon and paddlesports.
Her main passion is mountain biking, and most weekends she can be found staying in her van in the Tweed Valley, trying to maximise the amount of time she can spend riding her bike. When not riding you can find Rachel maintaining the trails with both Glentress Trailfairies and Tweed Valley Trail Association, or taking groups of kids of riding with her club, KICC (Scottish MTB Club of the year).
If she’s not around at the weekend, there’s a good chance it’s because Rachel is away at an event, whether it is endurance, navigation based or her latest flavour: Enduro. If she’s not taking part then she can often be found with a high-viz and a radio, either marshalling or providing first aid cover.
Neil: Coach, MTB leader. Neil has a background in Sports Development where he worked initially as a coach of nine different sports with both primary and high schools before becoming a lead officer within a local authority.
As a youngster he raced cyclo-cross and road to a high level in the North West of England. Since moving into Tweed Valley with his family four years ago he has quickly found his feet in the local biking community and states ‘adventure rides’ as his go to activity, alongside coaching. Neil’s favourite recent ride was the 2019 700km Torino-Nice bikepacking rally.

Cycle Ride Leader & Led Ride Assistant

This one day course covers the skills necessary to lead cycle rides on roads and on recognized cycle paths. Those wanting to become a ride leader should be a regular, confident and competent cyclist and know how to fix a puncture.
You should be a regular, confident and competent cyclist with good communication skills. We will cover:
Group managementSkills assessmentBike repairsRisk Assessment. Including procedures required to run a safe organised sporting activity that is exempt from current government restrictions on group sizes (accurate as of 14/9/20).
Candidates aged 16 & 17 can complete the course to be recognized as a Led-Ride Assistant. Led-Ride Assistants can only attend courses where the majority of candidates are over 18.
The course is currently based outdoors to comply with restrictions around Covid-19. Access to toilets and shelter will be available but it is a practical course in a led ride environment.
The course costs £75 per person, or £400 to organise a bespoke course for a group of 5-8 people.

Starting at Glentress but using local valley paths and roads to access other Tweed Valley hills this is a full day in the saddle for riders with the ability to be relatively self-sufficient over 6 hours. Ideal for those new to the valley or those looking to get beyond Glentress.
A mountain bike in very good working condition, helmet, waterproofs will need to be carried by every rider along with a packed lunch and water.

The scheme has been set up to help bikes or riders return to cycling. We will try our best to get older or previously unused bikes back on the road in the spirit of the scheme.
