The Girl Boss Chess Introductory Session offers an engaging and interactive way to introduce your child to the game of chess (to see if she likes it) or determine her level of skill for class placement. During this 30-minute virtual session, we introduce your child to the way we teach and the online tools we use, and invite you to observe and ask all the questions that you want. 

We love to bring the roles of the pieces to life and explain elements of the virtual chess board through dynamic storytelling. Our students connect with us through Zoom, a platform for video and audio collaboration, and learn using Lichess, a platform built specifically for online chess classes that offers a virtual chessboard and engaging games prepared by our instructors.

Course 3 main focus is on pattern recognition, introducing tactical themes such as "double attack" and "pin" to our Girl Bosses; however, by the end of course 3, our students also get a glimpse of the different strategic elements of chess.

By the completion of Summer Chess Camp, your child will confidently know about the chessboard - how to coordinate the squares through the files and ranks, the names of the pieces, how they move and their value. This knowledge prepares your child to learn strategy and play online which is presented in Course 1.

Chess for Beginners, like all of our camps, takes a holistic approach to improve your daughter’s confidence and critical thinking through chess. We’re here to help facilitate her making smart moves on and off the board.

Chess camp for Beginners will be held weekly starting July 5 in the mornings (9:00 am - 12:30 pm) and the afternoons (1:00 pm - 4:30 pm). When you book, you can choose your dates and times.

Pawn Chains and Endgames is our most advanced camp from a chess perspective. As chess master Stephan Gerzadowicz famously said “Openings teach you openings. Endgames teach you chess!” Your daughter's technical skill and confidence in the game will greatly improve during this week-long camp, soon she’ll be teaching you!

She’ll also have the chance to play in casual tournaments in GBC PLAYLAND! against other young chess enthusiasts, as well as take part in our empowerment and movement sessions.

Description of Classes

Monday | "Pawn structure if the framework that shows the pieces where to go." During this lesson, you will get to know the 3 pawn structures that are weak: isolated, backward and doubled. We will review some tips and examples of what to do when you have these pawns and when you are playing against them.

Tuesday | We will learn about two good kinds of pawns; connected and passed. we will review some positions and learn what to do depending on the strong pawn that we have.

Wednesday| In this class, we see how the kings can fight for themselves when only the pawns are left. We will learn the definition of opposition and outflanking and how to apply them in your endgames.

Thursday| In this class, we look at endings with king and pawn against a lone king. We will learn the best way to defend when you are behind and how to win if you are the one who is leading.

Friday| We learn the importance of the king in the endgame and see examples of how he becomes not only the most important but also the most powerful piece that can help you to win in the endgame

Let your little girl boss get acquainted with the beautiful world of mathematics as she sharpens her chess abilities.  Chess + Math Camp is designed to foster critical thinking skills by introducing experiential math concepts that stretch beyond the classroom. She’ll also have the opportunity to play chess against other like-minded girls, and improve her chess skills in a friendly, empowering environment.

This camp is perfect for girls with an interest in STEM. Rather than writing down and memorizing equations, your daughter will learn to understand the concepts of mathematics and their applications in real-world scenarios. Some topics that will be covered include the concept of infinity, an introduction to formal logic, and how artificial intelligence is used in the world’s most powerful chess engine.

This camp is recommended for girls between the ages of 10 and 13, who already understand the basics of chess. If your daughter hasn’t learned how to play yet, we recommend that she signs up for the “Chess for Beginners” camp prior to this one.

Description of Classes

Monday | What is infinity? What are the different types of infinity? And where do we apply and see the concept of infinity in real life?

Tuesday | What does the word "exponential" mean? Where can we see and apply this concept? We will also look at a famous problem known as "Rice on a Chessboard" to help illustrate this concept.

Wednesday | Logic is where math, philosophy and language all converge. Here we'll explore "formal logic" and deduction. We'll also learn to present our thoughts using logical operators.

Thursday | What are statistics? And how do people manipulate them? Continuing on the theme of critical thinking we established yesterday, we will look at what makes statistics accurate and valuable.

Friday | Stockfish and Google AlphaZero are some of the world's most powerful chess engines. They use decision trees and artificial intelligence. Here we will learn about the difference between the two, and the applications of these technologies outside of chess.
