This assessment is done on a full-day facility observation depending on the size of your facility it may be broken into multiple sessions. You will need to send me a copy of your facility's policies for me to review in advance. The focus of this assessment will be on illness and infectious disease prevention, supporting children with special healthcare needs, medication administration, safety, and injury prevention, emergency preparedness response and recovery, infant and child social-emotional wellbeing, child abuse and neglect, physical activity, nutrition, oral health, environmental health, staff health and wellness, and policy development and implementation. Following the initial observation, we will schedule a 30-minute to1-hour conversation about the observation and come up with a quality improvement plan together to help you reach your goals. A shorter follow-up observation is suggested to help gauge goal growth. This assessment can help increase your Star rating license score and sanitation score or help with teacher growth. We can customize it to meet your needs. If you would like to focus on certain aspects of your program please select from the other listing that breaks this technical assistance into categories. Programs/classrooms that do the initial assessment will receive the Mindful Kids Activity Card Set and if you do a follow-up observation you will be able to choose a larger classroom activity/toy set.

Miranda Lanning will come to your program to conduct a group training for staff on the following topics: (all training options listed here are 1-2 hours) Go-NAPSACC Training Topics: Outdoor Play and Learning, Oral Health, Reducing Screen Time, Child Nutrition, Breastfeeding Friendly Environments, Infant and Child Physical Activity. If you register for one of the GoNAPSACC trainings then your program will receive free resources based on the training topic. In the registration page indicate which training topic you would like to do. If you would like for a group training to occur at night please still select a day and time and in the comments indicate that you would like the training at night and I will try to make it happen.

This activity is designed for a group of children ages 2 and up. Children will go outside and collect natural items like leaves, flower petals, sticks, rocks, etc. They will then be creating paintbrushes with the supplies that they collect. We will then paint with our newly made paintbrushes. If you don't want them picking on your plants I can bring a bucket of natural materials, and if you don't want to paint we can water paint on the pavement. This activity will be done in conjunction with the lead teacher/family home provider completing the GONSAPSACC self-assessment on outdoor play and learning. All needed supplies for this activity will be provided by Miranda at no cost.

This training meets the NC Child Care Rule 10A NCAC 09 .1102 Health and Safety Training Requirements where one staff member must complete training in playground safety. This training is available by request only, it is free, and must be completed in person. I would prefer to host this training on the playground that the staff being trained will be working. This can be for a group or for a single person.

This training meets the requirements for people who work with infants to provide safe sleep environments. If you need fewer than 5 staff that need to be trained please go to the Partnership for Childrens website to have them register for a training there. If you would prefer for this to be a night time training please just select a day and time on the calendar and put in the comment that you would like the training to be held at night and I will try to make it happen. Participants will learn the definitions of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed and the associated risk factors. They will learn which North Carolina child care rules address the prevention of SIDS and infant safe sleep. The training also provides guidance on how to support and create a safe sleep environment. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives: Participants will learn · The definition of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed · To identify risk factors associated with SIDS and best practices around infant safe sleep · How NC Child Care Regulations and best practices support infant safe sleep

Select a time for Miranda to come to your center to review your breastfeeding policies and practices to help get you the breastfeeding-friendly designation. This designation can help increase the value that parents see in the care that you provide. She will also help you fill out the application if you need assistance with that as well. Why is this so important in child care? Human milk is the only food fully adapted to the physiology of human infants. Optimal breastfeeding is defined as initiating breastfeeding immediately after birth, exclusively breastfeeding until six months of age, and continuing breastfeeding for at least one year and up to two years of age or longer, with age-appropriate introduction of complementary foods. When you are caring for children under a year old if the family is already breast feeding it is essential that we support those families in every way we can. This designation is a recognition that you meet those standards.

This activity is designed for a group of children ages 1 and up. Children will gather together to do a guided yoga activity for 10-20 minutes depending on the age of the children and engagement in the activity. Yoga poses are from the Barefoot Books Yoga Pretzels card set. This activity will be done in conjunction with the lead teacher/family home provider completing the GONSAPSACC self-assessment on physical activity. All needed supplies for this activity will be provided by Miranda at no cost and the Yoga Pretzels card set will be left with the class to use in the future. Limited to the first 5 programs to book this activity.

In this activity, Miranda will bring all the food prep supplies and children will be able to taste different seasonal fruits and vegetables that they may not normally be exposed to. Produce items could include; persimmon, Jicama, dragon fruit, kumquat, rambutan, or edible flowers, Activity will lead children through identifying the part of the plant the produce came from, talking about what they see, feel, smell and taste and expressing what they think about each item. Children will not be forced or coerced to take a bite but encouraged to explore the items. Children will use child safe knives to also practice cutting skills. A set of 10 will be gifted to each participating classroom to use in the future. At the end of the session, teachers will receive the book Food Play by Amy Palanjian so they can explore other ways to get kids involved with their food . Teachers will also complete the GoNapsacc Nutrition Self Assessment and learn what best practices they are meeting and which ones need improvement. This activity is open to all child care centers and homes.

In this activity, children will do yoga along as the story Calm Bunny is read (teachers will receive a copy of this book at end of the activity). Children will learn the different poses for yoga stretches to help encourage diverse muscle development, balance, and practice being calm. This activity is intended for ages 2-5. Teachers will also complete the GoNapsacc self-assessment on Physical Activity to see where they are at in meeting those best practices and what they can do to improve.

Have a group of kids that need help with handwashing? I got a fun and free activity for you! In this activity, children will listen to the story Germs are Not for Sharing by Elizabeth Verdick and teach kids how to squash germs off their hands. The story will be followed up by a hand washing activity using a hand washing timer. The timer and storybook will be left with you to use in the future!

In this activity, Miranda will bring all the food prep supplies (except cups/straws/plates). Children will be able to create and taste different seasonal fruit and vegetable flavored ice creams that they may not normally be exposed to. Ice cream flavors may include Prickly Pear and lime (turns bright pink), Maple Peach, Fennel and Maple Syrup, Carrot cake, or Cucumber and Lemon. Don’t worry these flavors have been tested on kids already and they were all pretty well enjoyed. We will focus on where our taste buds are on our tongues and explain what we taste using the words savory, sweet, sour, meaty, spicy, etc. At the end of the session, teachers will receive the book Food Play by Amy Palanian so they can explore other ways to get kids involved with their food. Teachers will also complete the GoNapsacc Nutrition Self Assessment and learn what best practices they are meeting and which ones need improvement. This activity is open to all child care centers and family child care homes, activity is best suited for children 2 and older (babies can have taste but not help create). *please let me know if there are any food allergies present so I can plan accordingly. Recipe uses half and half, sugar, vanilla extract and the listed produce items for the flavors.

This training is intended to prepare staff who are looking to enroll a child with enternal feeding needs. This course is only offered on an as need basis to those who request it. Training developed by the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center covering enteral feedings in child care. Participants will learn about enteral feedings and reasons why children may have an enteral feeding or feeding tube, as well as learn about different types of feeding tubes. Additionally, participants will gain an understanding of daily routine care, how to recognize and respond to an emergency and identify strategies for the safe inclusion of child with a feeding tube.

Training objectives This training covers the requirements of OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standard and how it applies to child care. Participants will learn about bloodborne pathogens and how they are spread. They will be taught how to control exposure to bloodborne pathogens at work and what to do if they are exposed at work. If you would like for this training to occur in the evening please still request it using this website and contact Miranda Lanning to notify her that you would like to have it at night on the day you requested.

Course Description and List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Training developed by the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center covering allergies, anaphylaxis and emergency treatment in child care. Participants will learn about allergies and common allergens, how to reduce the risk of developing allergies and reduce exposure to allergens, to recognize signs and symptoms of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, become familiar with proper storage and use of epinephrine auto-injectors, how to follow emergency follow up procedures and about required documentation.

Course Description and List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Training developed by the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center covering Diabetes in child care. Participants will learn about: routine care of Type 1 Diabetes (communication with family and health care professionals, counting carbohydrates, checking blood glucose, and administering insulin), how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of high and low blood glucose, how to provide first aid for emergency situations, including checking ketones and administering glucagon, the proper use and storage of insulin and glucagon, and required documentation.

This course is offered when requested by childcare programs that are looking to enroll a child with a history of seizures or if a child has begun to have seizures. Course Description and List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Training developed by the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center covering Seizures in Child Care and Emergency Treatment. Participants will understand and recognize seizures, learn strategies for including a child with seizures in early care and education, and identify community resources and support. Participants will learn different types of seizures and common triggers, how to understand a seizure action plan, care team members who support children with seizures, steps of seizure first aid, and how to administer emergency medications including diazepam rectal gel.

Short Course Description Participants will learn medication best practices in early care and education including receiving, documenting, storage, and disposal. They will learn about NC Child Care regulations, types of medication, and the forms that are required to be completed before giving medication. They will also learn how to recognize, respond to, and report a medication error.

Course Description and List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives · Handwashing module: Participants learn about infectious disease and how it is spread. They are taught the consequences of inadequate handwashing, how to wash hands and assist children with handwashing, and when adults and children must wash hands in child care. Participants will learn common sources of violations and issues to avoid. · Diapering module: Participants learn when and how to check diapers, what kind of equipment is required for proper diapering, the correct steps of diapering and how proper diapering prevents the spread of germs. Participants learn common sources of violations and issues to avoid. · Toileting module: Participants learn about toilet rooms, toilet learning practices and equipment, and how to assist when children have accidents during toilet learning. · Sanitation module: Participants learn the difference between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. They learn how to clean, sanitize and disinfect and when to clean common items in child care including sleep areas, play areas, food areas, handwashing sinks, toileting and diapering areas, and keeping cleaning supplies, doorknobs, water fountains, floors, and cubbies clean. Participants learn common sources of violations and issues to avoid.

Course Description and List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Training developed by the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center covering prevention of unintentional injuries in child care. Participants will learn about unintentional injury prevention and North Carolina child care rules regarding reporting if incidents occur in child care. Additionally, participants will learn how to recognize signs of when to seek emergency care after an unintentional injury has occurred in child care.

This is the same required course that is offered on Moodle. Everyone is expected to retake this course every 5 years. Participants will learn about infectious disease and how it is spread. They will be taught how to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases. They will also learn the importance of immunizations, proper hygiene and sanitation routines, how to recognize ill children, and when to exclude children from care. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Participants will learn: · About infectious diseases and how they spread · How to prevent infectious diseases · How to recognize a child who is sick · How to control the spread of infectious disease

Participants will learn to recognize signs and symptoms of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. They will become familiar with proper storage and documentation for epinephrine auto-injectors. They will learn proper response to allergic reactions and emergency follow-up procedures. This training does not prepare participants to give medication to children. Additional in-depth, in-person, skills based training should be undertaken by early educators who will be responsible for giving medication to children. Participants will learn methods to recognize and minimize common hazards that exist in the building and physical premises of early care and education settings. They will learn about hazards from fire/burns, lead, choking/suffocation, slips/trips/falls or injuries outdoors, water and sun, and transportation. They will learn how to create safe indoor and outdoor learning environments. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Participants will learn: · How to create a safer physical environment indoors and outdoors · Examples of common hazards that can cause injury to young children · How to prevent injury and promote safe practices

They will also learn the basic needs in preparing a child care facility for an emergency, how to respond to an emergency, and what is needed to reunite children and families following an emergency. Participants will learn to identify and avoid common indoor hazards to keep both adults and children safe in child care. Participants will also learn about NC Child Care and NC Sanitation rules regarding safe use of and storage of hazardous materials and toxic substances. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Participants will learn: · Why children are more vulnerable to hazards · How to recognize hazards · How to minimize exposure to hazards

This class satisfies the CCDF training requirement and is the same training that can be found on moodle. Participants will learn about the safe transportation of children for routine and special occasion travel. They will learn how to keep children and other passengers safe while in a car, bus, or while walking. Participants will also learn about saving driving practices and vehicle safety. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Participants will learn: · Safe daily and special occasion transportation · Keeping young children safe while in a vehicle · Driver and vehicle safety including rules and laws

This class satisfies the CCDF training requirement and is the same training that can be found on moodle. Participants will learn the definitions of Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT) and how this type of abuse effects a young child. They will learn about early brain development, infant crying, and prevention of SBS/AHT. The training also provides guidance on how to recognize, respond to, and report SBS/AHT.

This training does not replace the Recognizing and Responding to Suspicions of Child Maltreatment as required in 10A NCAC 09 .1102(g) and 10A NCAC 09 .1703(a)(5). Training Objectives 1. Increase knowledge of prevention and recognition of child abuse and neglect. 2. Identify ways to respond to child maltreatment and understand the reporting process. 3. Understand the impact of compassion fatigue and resilience on early educators and the children and families they serve.

This course is offered as a follow up to the Medication in Child Care required course. Participants must have taken the required course to participate in the skills course. In order to request this course please email Miranda Lanning because we will need to find a date and time where a nurse partner can join to help teach the skills. Please email a list of suggested dates and times to help speed up the process of booking this course. You must have at least 5 people able to take the course and a maximum of 12. Short Course Description Participants will learn the skills needed to safely administer different types of medication to children, including oral, topical, inhalation, and instillation medication. It will NOT cover “emergency/rescue medications” such as types of injectable medication, infusion medication or rectal gels or suppositories. This training should be taken by anyone in the facility who will be administering medication to children. List of Learner Outcomes/Objectives Participants will learn: · The skills needed to safely administer medication to children

One staff member from every facility must take the EPR in Child Care Training. If the trained person leaves then an alternate staff member must be trained within four months of the trained person leaving.  All other staff are required to take the CCDF Emergency Preparedness Overview training.  This is an additional and separate process from being oriented to their facility's EPR plan. This training will cover defining EPR, identifying types of emergency events that could impact early care and education settings, understanding risk assessment, the stages of EPR planning, Child Care Regulations and best practices related to EPR. At the completion of this training Miranda Lanning will also be able to help you update/create your EPR plan.

This coaching starts with a review of facility policies related to children with special health care needs and a conversation about the types of accommodations of children enrolled. Then a review of the facility and classroom environment will be conducted along with asking involved teachers how they plan to accommodate for children's needs. We will then discuss all things noted in the review and come up with a plan together if needed. You will receive a printed copy of the observation notes. If additional training or technical assistance providers are recommended I will help coordinate that follow-up. A shorter follow-up observation is suggested a few months after the initial observation to help gauge goal growth.

This process begins with a review of the program's current Emergency Plan. After the review, we will discuss any recommendations to alter the plan. If assistance is needed to log into the plan and make the changes (the state requires that they are updated annually) then that will be done during this coaching session.

This coaching starts with a one-hour observation of the classroom/FCCH preferably when lunchtime overlaps. I will be observing handwashing, diapering, and mouthed toys procedures. Following the observation, we will schedule a 10-minute conversation about the observation and come up with a quality improvement plan together to help you reach your goals. You will receive a printed copy of the observation notes. A shorter follow-up observation is suggested a few months after the initial observation to help gauge goal growth. This assessment can help increase your program's sanitation score! Programs/classrooms that do the initial assessment will receive the book Germs are Not for Sharing by Elizabeth Verdick and if you do a follow-up observation you will be able to choose a larger classroom activity/toy set.

This coaching will begin by reviewing what related training participating teachers/FCCH providers have. This will be followed by a 1 hour observation of participating staff and a review of facilities layout. The observation will primarily focus on: - Facility layout -No maltreatment is inflicted on any child -No inappropriate discipline or corporal punishment is inflicted on any child. After the observation is complete the participating staff will receive a copy of the observation and if needed we will come up with a quality improvement plan. If an additional technical assistance provider is needed to help with child behavior then that recommendation may be included in the plan. I am not a child behavior specialist but I can help determine if one is needed. Going through this process can help teachers identify strategies to create more supportive environments for the children they work with and potentially help create an emotionally supportive environment for all children.

This coaching starts with a review of the program's policies and procedures related to medication administration. We will then go through how current medications are stored and administered. If any children need medication an observation of that procedure is preferably observed or at least talked through. After the observation/review we will discuss any recommended changes and come up with a quality improvement plan together if needed. This can be a great way to help reduce medication errors or come up with a plan for administering new medications if a program is not used to it. If any additional training is needed then I will follow up with getting those trainings scheduled or coordinate with a nurse to help get staff needed skills.

This coaching will begin by reviewing what related training participating teachers/FCCH providers have. This will be followed by a 1-2 hour observation of participating staff. The observation will primarily focus on: - Staff engage in supportive conversations with children in their care -Staff promote self regulation skills in children -Staff maintain predictable daily routines -Staff addressing challenging behaviors -Staffs systems to share developmental observations with families After the observation is complete the participating staff will receive a copy of the observation and if needed we will come up with a quality improvement plan. If an additional technical assistance provider is needed to help with child behavior then that recommendation may be included in the plan. I am not a child behavior specialist but I can help determine if one is needed. Going through this process can help teachers identify strategies to create more supportive environments for the children they work with and potentially help create an emotionally supportive environment for all children.

This session's direction will be determined on if the program already has a teeth brushing program in place or is looking to start one. If the program has a program in place then the session will start with an observation of current teeth-brushing practices. All observation notes will be given to the participating teacher and if a quality improvement plan is created together then a follow up observation will be recommended. If the program is looking to start teeth brushing then this conversation can discuss any questions you have. Then I will recommend staff take the GoNAPSACC free online course on oral health. We also have a regional oral health specialist who can come to your program and help create an oral health system with you! I will help you connect with our specialist as needed.

This session will be conducted by a review of the facility and looking for the following: -Hazardous or potentially toxic materials are used and stored safely -Products with strong odors are not used. -Carpets are kept clean without creating dust or excess moisture. -No toxic plants are accessible to children. -Adults are able to recognize when a child may have been poisoned and can respond appropriately. -Integrated pest management practices are used to prevent infestations of nuisance animals or insects. If a quality improvement plan is talked about then a follow-up observation is recommended to see how changes have impacted the facility. This can be a great way to help prepare for a formal sanitation inspection.

This session will begin by reviewing to see if staff are up to date in related trainings. We will then go over the staff expsure control plan and check for understanding among staff. We will then review to ensure that all staff has protective procedures and equipment to protect them from exposure to blood. We will also review program strategies to help staff stay informed and safe against illness and injury. We will also discuss facilities programs, procedures and resources for stress management and reduction. After completion of this review then we will discuss any quality improvement measures and discuss additional tactics/resources to help support staff. This can be a great way to help employee retention and show your staff you care about their wellbeing. All participating programs will receive a free copy of Mindful Kids cards to help encourage wellness in classrooms.

This session will begin by reviewing in advance the meals planned for the next cycle of menus (or most recent menus). Menus will be reviewed to see if they follow the meal patterns for children in child care program requirements. During the selected time we will discuss any observations from this plan and then review the program's procedures around communicating meals to parents, keeping track of food allergies, special dietary/feeding needs, how human milk is stored/handled, and procedures for meal times. After the discussion facility will receive a copy of notes and if a quality improvement plan is created then a follow-up discussion will be recommended to discuss progress toward goals.

This session will begin by checking to ensure participating staff are up to date on related and required training. Then I will conduct an assessment of the indoor and outdoor environments to review equipment and materials for active play. I will then observe the outdoor playtime session occur to observe children's use of the space. After the observation, I will give participating teachers/FCCH providers a copy of the observation notes and review it with them. If a quality improvement goal is created then a follow-up observation is recommended for follow-up. Additionally, I will recommend teachers fill out the self-assessment from GoNAPSACC on Outdoor Play and Learning and then review the recommendations to meet those best practices as well. This can be a great way to discuss any future developments of outdoor space and help provide the highest quality spaces for children to be physically active.

This session will begin by checking to ensure participating staff are up to date on related and required training. Then I will conduct an assessment of the indoor and outdoor environments to look for any hazards as listed by the state. An observation of the classroom will then occur to observe a teacher's supervision strategies both indoors and outdoors. If nap time overlaps and there are infants present then I will also observe safe sleep practices. After the observation, I will give participating teachers/FCCH providers a copy of the observation notes and review it with them. If a quality improvement goal is created then a follow-up observation is recommended for follow-up.

Prior to the scheduled session please send a copy of all program policies for me to review in advance. Alternatively, you can also just send me one policy that you are most interested in being reviewed. While I review the policy I will check to ensure each policy follows the state requirements and best practices. During our scheduled session we will discuss my notes on your program's policies and talk about how the procedures are working for you. If any changes are recommended to your policy please remember that you must notify all enrolled families and staff two weeks prior to the effect of the changes in the program's policy. This can be a great way to check and make sure you are doing what your policy states or to think through any changes you want to make to your program.

This activity is designed for a group of children ages 2 and up. Children will be practicing their fine motor skills and discussing different birds that live in our area and how/what they eat. Children will learn about how blue herrings, hummingbirds, pelicans and sparrows have different types of beaks and how the shape of their beak can tell us what they eat. Using different tools to represent the beaks children will try to separate the "food" into different containers. All supplies for this activity will be supplied by Miranda Lanning. If you are a FCCH we can still make adjustments for your younger children to try to do this activity with the older ones. Every group that engages in this activity will receive a copy of the Kids Gardening Activity book or a copy of the book Jacks Garden (teachers choice). This activity is offered along with the completion of a self-assessment reflection from Go-Napsacc on Infant/Child Physical Activity.

This activity is designed for a group of children ages 1 and up. I will either bring soil with me at your request or we will go collect soil from outside together. Together we will sort out the large rocks and debris from the piles we collect. We will then crush the soil into as fine of power as possible. Then we will mix in glue to turn the soil into a paste. Children will then paint with our freshly made soil paint onto paper. I will bring all the necessary supplies. Teachers will need to complete the GoNAPSACC self-assessment on outdoor play and learning.

This coaching starts with a one to three-hour observation of the classroom/FCCH preferably when lunchtime overlaps. I will be observing handwashing, food preparation, nap time, and mouthed toys procedures. I will also review your programs vaccine records to help you check that everything is up to date. Following the observation, we will schedule a 10-minute conversation about the observation and come up with a quality improvement plan together to help you reach your goals. You will receive a printed copy of the observation notes. A shorter follow-up observation is suggested a few months after the initial observation to help gauge goal growth. This coaching begins with a review of you employee training documents. I will go theough and check that all staff have their training records up to date. We will then review all current practices of keeping in ratio. I will then observe any participating classrooms to assess their active supervision practices. I will also be assessing how the room is organized to allow for proper supervision. You will receive a printed copy of the observation notes. A shorter follow-up observation is suggested a few months after the initial observation to help gauge goal growth. This assessment can help increase your program's star rating score. Programs/classrooms that do the initial assessment will receive a complementary book. If you do a follow-up observation you will be able to choose a larger classroom activity/toy set.

This session will begin by checking the programs safe sleep policy and checking staff training certificates. I will then conduct a 1 hour observation of the participating classroom during nap time. I will be looking for the completion of safe sleep checks and the environment that the children are sleeping in. This can be a great time for new teachers to make sure they feel comfortable with the steps to follow during this time.

This assessment will review your outdoor play environment. I will begin by looking throught your programs playground safety check logs. I will then check through all outdoor playground environments for any potential hazards. This can also be an opportunity to discuss future plans for the playground and "dream scape" what you want to achieve in this space.

During this time I will review the procedures in the kitchen and food preparation. We will focus on sanitation practices and food storage. This can also be a great opportunity to discuss feeding practices.
