About the company
Happy Minds School of Music (HMSM) opened its doors in Bellevue, WA, in July 2013.
We began as a small music school with three instructors providing 1-on-1 violin, viola, piano, and guitar lessons to about 40 students. With the incredible support from our customers via referrals and our dedicated music instructors, we have grown to 16 instructors and over 150 students, offerings music lessons in string (violin, viola & cello), piano, woodwind (clarinet, saxophone & flute), and guitar, ukulele, drums, and voice.
HMSM also offers three different formalized accreditation programs for students wanting a challenging curriculum with or without the intention of pursuing college credit or music school applications. In the past decade, we have helped over a hundred students receive their performance certificates via RCM, RSL, and Trinity College London.
With the growing demand for music lessons on the East Side, we're pleased to announce that Happy Minds School of Music will be opening in Redmond in the Fall of 2023, bringing the same high-quality music lessons closer to our customers in Redmond, Sammamish, Kirkland, Bothell, Carnation and other areas.

Dr. Joan Tay received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master’s degrees from the
The University of Oregon, where she studied with Dean Kramer and Claire Wachter. She
received a full scholarship as a graduate employee in piano pedagogy and collaborative
piano during her studies at the University of Oregon. Dr. Tay studied at the University of
Canterbury and completed her undergraduate studies with a full scholarship at the Yong
Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore. Past teachers include Michael Endres and Albert
Tiu. An avid solo and collaborative performer, Dr. Tay was awarded the “Outstanding
Graduate Performer in Collaborative Piano” in 2023 and performed at the School of
Music and Dance Commencement. She also received the “Outstanding Graduate
Performer in Piano” and “Best Accompanist” awards in 2019. Dr. Tay was a prize winner
of the 2022 MTNA — Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition National Final,
2020 Eugene Symphony Guild Young Artist Competition and winner of the 2018 Oregon
MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition. She was a finalist in the Yong Siew Toh
Conservatory Piano Concerto Competition and performed with the Metropolitan Festival
Orchestra in the 2015 Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition Final. She has
most recently performed in public masterclasses with Jon Kimura Parker, Natasha
Paremski, Jeffrey Kahane and Anton Nel. Dr. Tay has over five years of experience teaching at the pre-college and collegiate levels. She has taught students of various ages and backgrounds, ranging from the young
beginner to the advanced college student, in private studio, masterclass, and group
class settings. Dr. Tay believes that her role as a teacher is to guide students to discover
the concepts of music-making for themselves for a more effective and satisfying learning
experience. In lessons, Dr. Tay emphasizes posture and musical skills such as sight-
reading, theory, ensemble playing, and rhythm. She believes everyone can learn to play the piano, and progress depends on both teacher and student. Dr. Tay aims to create a positive and inclusive learning environment in which students can build confidence and develop their own musical voice while emphasizing the life skills of self-
motivation, determination, and perseverance. She finds fulfillment when her students learn
and enjoy the process. Dr. Tay likes to bake, play with her friends’ cats, and watch Korean dramas in her free time. She also enjoys working out and re-learning the violin.

Dr. Carolina borns in Barranquilla, Colombia. She completed her undergraduate studies at Catholic University in Washington DC and pursued her Master’s in Vocal Performance at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. She is currently a DMA candidate in Vocal Performance at the University of Washington. Carolina has been teaching piano and voice at a very high level since 2002, providing private lessons at the collegiate level and classroom instruction at the elementary school level. She has extensive operatic, theatrical, and solo experience performing in numerous operas and musicals. Opera roles include Dialogues of the Carmelites, L’Elisir d’amore, Die Zauberflöte, Don Pasquale, Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Fledermaus, Cosí fan tutte, Der Freischütz, and the Musicals She Loves Me, Fiorello! and West Side Story performed in Washington DC, New York and Texas. Additionally, she performed for the Houston Grand Opera for several seasons. Carolina is multilingual speaking fluently in Italian, Spanish and English. Carolina has a passion for teaching and loves to work with students of all ages.

Ms. Madeline is a violist and educator based in Seattle, Washington. She got a Master's degree in Viola Performance at the University of Washington in 2021 where she is an instructor for chamber music, baroque ensemble, and the viola studio. Previously based at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, she earned degrees in both Viola Performance and Music Education and played with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Ann Arbor Camerata, and many other local groups. Madeline teaches string players of all ages and freelances in the Seattle area. As a teacher, Madeline helps her students create a methodical style of practice that will help them teach themselves. She has learned from her own experience that quality practice and discipline are crucial to learning and mastering an instrument. She inspires her students to practice and plays expressively, channeling their real feelings and experiences into musical expression.

Ms. Red has been playing the guitar for 25 years and teaching for over 18. He has developed his personalized curriculum, which uses popular guitar-driven rock and pop songs as musical etudes, to educate the students with valuable theory, reading, techniques, and scale theory while keeping the lessons fun through the learning of songs. Red has taught students of all ages, from children to adults. His proudest accomplishments in teaching include preparing and aiding some of his future professional musician students to enrol in music colleges, including UCLA, Musicians Institute, and the Berklee College of Music. Currently Red has planted his roots here in Seattle, taking a break from the rigors of the road. He wants to take this opportunity to teach a new generation of aspiring guitarists and he is pursuing his Master degree in performance guitar.

Alex is a critically-acclaimed cellist with credits including an Emmy Award-winning recording and appearances in arts festivals in Europe, Asia, and North America. He is an experienced music educator, most recently serving as Music Director at Holderness School where his students have continued to college programs in instrumental performance, film scoring, and music therapy. Alex has worked extensively with violinists, violists, and cellists at all levels in private lessons, group classes, and mixed ensembles.
Alex’s teaching philosophy is student-centered. He is committed to creating a safe and inspiring learning environment for students of all backgrounds and abilities. Lesson plans can range from traditional classical repertoire to contemporary music, improvisation, and composition. Alex's Bachelor’s Degree is in Cello Performance from the University of Maryland, studying with Evelyn Elsing of the Left Bank String Quartet, and he received a Master’s Degree from DePaul University, studying with Brant Taylor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Alex is a former cellist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and String Orchestra Director at Music Inc. Chicago.
Composing, singing, and acting are essential to Alex's artistic personality. He has toured internationally with the cinematic shadow puppetry company Manual Cinema, served as co-artistic director of the artist collective Mocrep, co-starred in the Chicago premiere of Ghost Quartet by Broadway composer Dave Malloy, and has performed his original music at a wide variety of venues around the country. Besides music, Alex enjoys hiking, soccer, cooking, chess, and being with animals.

Mr. Owen Yen - Guitar and Ukulele Instructor
Mr. Owen has been playing guitar professionally for over 30 years, covering various genres such as jazz, big band, rock, pop, and classical. Owen studied guitar and theory at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago for 8+ years and was the band leader for the jazz group “Q-Blue” which performed at various venues in Chicago. Since moving to Seattle in 2005, he has played guitar and bass in rock bands such as “Full Vinyl Jacket” (class rock cover band), “Daisy Wrench” and “Boxcar Tourists” (original indie rock). He also has been both a regular as well as substitute player for local big bands, including the MachOne Orchestra, Route 66 Big Band, Cascadia Big Band, Microsoft Big Band, Seattle Jazz Network, etc. Besides that, Mr. Owen also likes classical music and has been playing with a guitar/flute duet group “Duo Lyrico” that performs classical music at various events.
